The Best Time to Visit Brazil, Region by Region

Brazil has no single 'best season', it has many. Our founders, who live in Brazil, break down the ideal months for Rio, the Amazon, the Pantanal and the beaches.

One of the questions we hear most often is deceptively simple: "When should we come to Brazil?" The honest answer, from people who live here, is that it depends entirely on where you want to go. Brazil is larger than the continental United States, and its regions run on completely different rhythms.

Quick answer: Rio and the Costa Verde are best April–June and September–November. The Amazon has two good but different seasons: January–June (high water, boats glide into the flooded forest) or July–December (low water, wildlife concentrates on exposed riverbanks). The Pantanal peaks July–October for wildlife. Lençóis Maranhenses' lagoons are fullest June–August. Florianópolis is beach season December–March, or April–May for hiking and surfing without the crowds. Read on for the reasoning behind each, or jump straight to your destination.

Rio de Janeiro & the Costa Verde

Best months: April–June and September–November. These shoulder seasons bring warm, clear days without the intense heat and crowds of the December–February high summer. The sea around Paraty and Ilha Grande is at its calmest and clearest for boat days.

If you dream of Carnival, plan for February, but book many months ahead and expect peak prices.

The Amazon

High-water season (roughly January–June) lets boats glide deep into the flooded forest, you drift between the treetops. Low-water season (July–December) exposes beaches and trails, and wildlife concentrates along the riverbanks. There is no wrong choice; they are simply two different journeys.

The Pantanal

The dry season, July–October, is unbeatable for wildlife. As the wetlands recede, jaguars, capybaras, giant otters and hundreds of bird species gather around the remaining water. This is when our jaguar-tracking safaris have their highest success rate.

Lençóis Maranhenses

The famous rain-water lagoons between the dunes fill between May and September, June to August is the sweet spot, when the lagoons are full, deep-blue and warm enough to swim in.

Florianópolis & the south

December to March is beach summer: long, hot days and the island at its liveliest. For hiking, surfing and oysters without the crowds, we love April and May, when the water is still warm and the light turns golden.

So, when should you come?

That is exactly the conversation we love to have. Tell us what you want to feel, jaguars at dawn, empty beaches, a city humming with music, and we will build the route and the timing around it. Every journey we plan is private, tailor-made and guided by locals.
